The safety of our students, faculty and staff is a top priority for Johnson C. Smith University. Therefore, the administration is monitoring Hurricane Irene closely and has established a plan that will be implemented should Hurricane Irene affect the Charlotte area directly.

Johnson C. Smith Professor Sharon Raynor will be working with Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies to conduct and document community experiences, spoken memory, oral history and the literacy and culture of silence during the spring 2012 semester.
Writing Helps Lawson Live with Cancer

Susan Lawson feels she has a 'calling' to teach writing. When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she learned that survivorship was limited to five-year statistics. "I asked myself why I would need five years to accomplish what I really felt passionate about doing today," says Lawson, an English instructor and academic advisor at Johnson C. Smith University.

Ten new Smart Classrooms can be added annually with ongoing support from alumni and friends. Thanks to JCSU alumna Christy Bryant ('75), who holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics, a Smart Classroom now exists in the Perry Science Hall.
CATO Corporation Donates $250,000 to JCSU

The CATO Corporation of Charlotte, N.C., has awarded Johnson C. Smith University $250,000 to support The CATO Scholarship for Teacher Education at the university.

Freshman sensation Leford Green has been selected as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Region Track Athlete of the Year. Green holds the nation's best time in the 400 meters at 45.56.
Fred "Curly" Neal Inducted Into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame

Johnson C. Smith University alumnus Fred "Curly" Neal was among eight inductees at the 45th annual North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame held at the North Raleigh Hilton on Thursday evening. Neal became the 253rd member of the prestigious Hall of Fame and joins the likes of other HOF members from the CIAA such as Sam Jones (1969), Dr. Leroy Walker (1975), Clarence "Big House" Gaines (1978), Bobby Vaughan (1992), John McLendon (1994), and George Williams (2000) to name a few.

On February 11-13, 2016, President Ronald L. Carter, CFO Greg Petzke and University College Dean Antonio Henley flew out to Seattle with four JCSU students to meet with members of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. JCSU was selected from a community of high-performing colleges and universities committed to ensuring that many more low-income and first generation students and students of color achieve high-quality degrees.
